Coat of Arms of another Bavarian Rausch family

by Robert D. Brinker, M. A.

Supplementary to the official coat-of-arms adopted by the Roush family, research has revealed a later one which had been conferred upon the Bavarian branch of Rausch family in 1819. The arms are to be found and described in SIEBMACHER WAPPENBUCH, a set of which is in the Library of Congress, at Washington, D. C., in Volume 2, Part 1, Plate 127, text page 105. The account reads as follows:

Adel des Konigreichs Bayern

Rausch von Fuchsendorff, geadelt von Konig Max. II, 1819. Wappen: In Gr. ein schraglinker s. Fluss. - Auf dem Helm ein gr. Brackenkopf und Hal, mit dem Schragfluss belegt. - Decken: gr. and s.

This description may be translated:

Nobility of the Bavarian Kingdom

Rausch of Fuchsendorff, (place of residence) knighted by
King Maximillian in 1819.

Arms: In shield a left diagonal fluorated - On the helmet a large head and neck of a lime-hound (used by huntsmen of former centuries), with diagonal bevel overlaid.
Cover (of shield): green and black.

It is entirely possible that the heraldry was granted as a reward to some member of the Bavarian Rausch family who had rendered distinguished service to the king in the Napoleonic Wars which ended with the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. Until 1870 there was no definite confederation of the German states and Bavaria was ruled by the king. It is moreover to be assumed that the honor was conferred by Maximillian I, king of Bavaria from 1816 to 1825, rather than by Maximillian II who ruled as king of Bavaria from 1848 to 1864. The Bavarian family was not far removed geographically from the other Palatine Provinces.
